Handle matching now works even when handles aren't formatted

22 June 2026

If your spreadsheet identifies products by Handle, the values no longer have to be in Shopify’s exact handle format to match.

Shopify stores handles in a specific way: all lowercase, with spaces and most punctuation turned into hyphens (so “Men’s Wool Scarf” becomes “mens-wool-scarf”). Previously, if your file listed handles with capital letters, spaces, or other characters, they wouldn’t line up with what’s in your store and the rows would come back as unmatched. That often happens when a handle column is generated by a supplier feed or another tool you can’t change.

Now we normalize each Handle value to Shopify’s format before looking it up, so:

  • Uploading and analyzing a spreadsheet finds the right products even when the handles are capitalized or have spaces.
  • Spreadsheet edits and variant imports that match on Handle resolve to the correct products instead of skipping them.

Nothing changes for files whose handles are already correctly formatted, and you don’t need to reformat your supplier’s column to get a match.
