When an edit or import runs into a problem, getting a clear explanation of what went wrong — and how to fix it — makes all the difference. We’ve added 26 new documented error codes so more of the issues you might hit while editing products now come with a plain-language description and concrete steps to resolve them.
The new codes cover a wide range of situations across products, variants, metafields, inventory, and the Shopify API, including:
- Products — tag limit exceeded, missing titles, suspended products, deprecated taxonomy categories, and unknown media references
- Variants — hitting the daily variant creation limit, metafield-linked option values, combined listing parents, and prices outside the allowed range
- Metafields — wrong metaobject definition, numeric range violations, format and pattern mismatches, invalid references, deleted owner products, option-linked metafields, and uniqueness constraints
- Inventory — a brand new category with codes for situations like trying to unstock the last location, unstock blocked by unfulfilled orders or incoming transfers, stocking without a SKU, inventory managed by another app, and HS code format issues
- Edits — invalid price formats caused by locale or currency symbols, and invalid ISO country codes
- Shopify API — publication not found
Each error code links to an entry in our error codes reference with a clear description of what the error means and step-by-step instructions for fixing it. That means you can self-serve a lot more issues without waiting on support, and when you do reach out, sharing an error code helps us help you faster.
No action is needed on your end — these codes show up automatically in edit logs and error messages when a relevant issue is detected.
